Named after the original store from the 1960s, Shim's Surplus Supplies was established by Fred Shimkovsky in Oakland in 1940. Shimkovsky's son later moved his family to Nevada and opened the store on Sierra Street. Due to a flood, the store relocated to 125 W 3rd Street, where it continued to serve the fine people of Reno.
