Welcome to Shim's. Named after the store from the 1960's, Shim's Surplus Supplies was originally established by Fred Shimkovsky in Oakland in 1940. Shimkovsky's son later moved his family to Nevada and opened the store on Sierra Street. Due to a flood the store relocated to 125 W 3rd Street where it continued to service the people of Reno.

The term "speakeasy" gained wide currency during the prohibition era of the United States. So called, from the practice of speaking quietly and well about such a place in public, or when inside it, so as not to alert the police and neighbours.

Enjoy our offerings and speak easy of us.
